trouble in paradise
Politics and sailing don’t mix, especially when people choose to express their political opinions by rioting in the streets and burning down buildings awfully close to the yacht club. The current turmoil in the small French-run South Pacific island of New Caledonia has forced the postponement of the Sydney-Noumea Yacht Race due to start on […]

50 years
Skip Novak has a new book out, and it promises to be a good one. Here’s an excerpt. Enjoy. Having had the impression that I should be keeping my head down about the topic of use or overuse of lifejackets, I might as well get on with this one and get it over with. I […]
angry dolphins
The Environment The now infamous pod of orcas swimming the waters near Gibraltar struck again this weekend sinking their first vessel of 2024. Scientists remain puzzled why this one pod of “killer whales” appears to have been repeatedly going after vessels in this region over the past four years. The supposition continues to be that […]

Seventeen Cape 31s lined up for the start of Round 2 of the 2024 31 Race Circuit, hosted by the Royal Thames Yacht Club. New owners and husband-wife team, Christian & Jacintha Hamilton-Love aboard Khumbu Red, led for the whole regatta and secured victory overall by a single point. Charlie Whelan’s Bodfather clinched the win […]
“i hate wind”
The Environment Just in case you forgot what a loathsome, environment-hating, big oil whore sack of orange shit Trunt is… Donald Trump has vowed to immediately halt offshore wind energy projects “on day one” of a new term as US president, in his most explicit threat yet to the industry and the latest in a […]
vulgarize the sport
It used to be that the most potent expression of patriotism any person could make was to declare: “My country – right or wrong”. These days in sailing it’s more like: “My country – or whoever wants to pay me more”. The idea that elite sailors should aspire to no greater honor than to compete […]
the eyes have it
A Detached Retina and Emergency Eye Surgery Threatened Everything As one of America’s most accomplished sailors of his generation, and the only American to ever win an Olympic Medal, the America’s Cup, and the Round the World Race, John Kostecki has built an incredibly successful professional sail racing career and is widely acknowledged as one […]
we’ve been warned
The Environment The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center forecasted a “severe solar storm” that’s expected to hit Earth tonight, according to a release. These geomagnetic storms happen every so often, but as the Sun approaches the maximum of its 11-year solar cycle, the space weather is getting more intense. A geomagnetic storm […]
i quit!
No, I didn’t quit Sailing Anarchy, nor quit doing podcasts, I quit racing sailboats! I’m done, finished, burnt out, tired, old – you name it. I’ve been racing for 56 years, and in my own weird way, I’ve been there and done that and that’s quite enough! I’ll still be commenting, complaining, and critiquing, but […]
so ya wanna go solo?
Swiss-German solo sailor, Oliver Heer, is facing a gruelling personal battle in the Transat CIC race, a notoriously difficult solo transatlantic crossing. While the leading boats have already crossed the finish line just outside of New York, Heer faces several more days at sea as he continues to fight through a series of setbacks and […]

Concerned with an environmental commitment, it will also be an awareness center for all ages. Read on.

Kid gloves at the ready
To ship a classic yacht requires a different sort of careful treatment. The ability to reliably ship yachts around the globe is a pre-requisite for many of today's regattas. As with state-of-the-art racing yachts, Sevenstar recognises that classic yachts of all sizes and descriptions need special attention. ‘These are unique yachts that are often similar to works of art and must be treated with the greatest of care,’ says Sevenstar's classic yacht expert Matthieu Le Bihan. The company transports roughly 3,000 yachts a year on its own vessels, so the master, officers and crew all understand the processes.
Tailored to the task
Code sails and flying headsails put huge demands on the reliability of sailcloth. Now there’s a solution. The advent of code zeros and flying headsails has produced a leap forward in reaching performance among all boat types, from cruisers to Grand Prix racers. The market has responded favorably with sales of these sails being robust for all sailmakers at all scales. To achieve the same levels of efficiency that decades of their development of upwind headsail sailcloth has produced, Dimension- Polyant has now put the same effort of development into the introduction of a new cloth style, CZ Uni Black.
Ready to summit again
Henri-Lloyd is going back to its roots with plans to make sailing gear that lasts for decades and a focus on offshore racing. New product launches in the clothing world often feel like they come as regularly as the sailing seasons that they cater for. But every now and then there are announcements that mark changes from technological advances to broad reassessments of the manufacturer’s focus. For Henri- Lloyd, it was the announcement of both these factors that made their 2023-24 show season a special one as they unveiled a new strategy, along with a new yachting and boating range.
The beating heart of sailing
The Annapolis Sailboat Show is a celebration of boating at its best. Nestled on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, Annapolis has long been a pilgrimage site for sailors. Dubbed America’s Sailing Capital, the city’s narrow streets are steeped with a maritime legacy that spans over three centuries. Its skyline has a unique dynamism, typified by an ever-renewing assortment of masts no less than the domes of the Naval Academy Chapel and State House. The Annapolis Sailboat Show (October 10-14, 2024) was born out of this nautical fervor more than 50 years ago.
As good as it gets
Almost three decades after it was first staged as an end-of-season jamboree for yachts and crews preparing to cross the Atlantic, the 2024 edition of Superyacht Cup Palma promises to be a cracker, says Phil Riley. Superyacht Cup Palma, Europe's longest-running superyacht regatta, is now gearing up to celebrate its 28th anniversary from June 19-22 in what may be a spectacular 2024. ‘If you build it, they will come’ — the now famous prophetic line from the 1989 film Field of Dreams that inspired farmer Kevin Costner to build a baseball diamond in his Iowa cornfields.
